VOLCANOES ROAD

Day 1: Salta City. Welcoming at Salta´s airport and transfer to hotel

Transfer in private at night to a folkloric Peña (traditional music/dancing show) in La Vieja Estacion. Dinner, show, tradicional menu. Night in Salta. Altitude: 3937 ft.

Day 2: City Tour

Visit to Salta city, the principal square and the most important buildings like: the Cathedral, Cabildo, San Francisco Church, etc. Our journey continues towards San Bernardo hill, we visit Gral. Guemes monument, and San Lorenzo summer village, located 6 miles from downtown. Later visit to the handcrafts market where you’ll be able to observe and purchase original objects made by craft men and women from all our province. Return to hotel. Night in Salta. Miles: 6. Altitude: 3937 ft

Day 3: Tolar Grande

Breakfast. Departure from Salta to San Antoio de los Cobres (10990 ft). During the journey we´ll go through Campo Quijano and Tastil, similar to the road the Tren de las Nubes does, in fact the route goes by the train railroads, passing through the Quebrada del Toro. Then we´ll cross the andean path “Abra Blanca” (over 13123 ft) where we´ll have the first overview of the Puna Salteña. Continuing to San Antonio de los Cobres and arriving to Tolar Grande at afternoon. The road goes through the so called Labyrinth Desert, a clay, pink dust and gypsum crystals formation. Later almost arriving to Tolar Grande, will appear in front of us the Salar of Arizaro´s inmensity, and inmediatly one of the most amazing views of the Andean range, with Llullaillaco and Socompa volcanoes as the principal ones. Box lunch on the road arriving to Tolar Grande. Dinner and breakfast are prepared and served at a family house. Not only offering an excellent service, also you can experience the inhabitants daily routine. Night at Franco Argentino Refuge. Miles: 62 miles road. 199 gravel. Maximum altitude: 10990 ft.

Day 4: Mine La Casualidad (Julia’s Mine) Visit

Early departure towards La Casualidad mine, crossin over the Salar de Arizaro, the third biggest one in the world. Before that, Caipe Train Station visit. Driving on an asphalt route, we arrive to La Casualidad. This mine was the most important one in the mining of sulphur business until it was closed in 1978. It’s located in the Andes Range, near the international border with Chile and Catamarca’s province. We´ll visit abandoned buildings and return to Tolar Grande at afternoon. Nigt in Franco Argentino Refuge. Miles: 186 gravel. Maximum altitude: 17060 ft. At arrival: 11975 ft

Day 5: Antofalla / El Peñon

Breakfast. Early departure through Salar de Arizar, visit to Cono de Arita (a shocking natural pyramid with volcanic origin). Continuing our trip through Campo Amarillo to cross over later the Salar de Antofalla and it´s respective forgotten in time town where there are only 40 people living. This salt flat amazes you for it’s beautiful landscape. After lunch (Box lunch) the journey continues and you visit Antofagasta de la Sierra, towards El Peñon. This region is known for it´s volcanic activity allowing us to appreciate some of them. It´s also the place with the highest concentration of vicuñas in the country. Dinner at hotel. Night in El Peñon. El Peñon. miles: 168 gravel Maximum altitude: 15091 ft At arrival: 11155 ft.

Day 6: Pumice Field Visit and Carachipampa Volcano

Tour through pumice field, unique in the world. Is an strange but dazzling landscape carved into the rock that gives birth to it´s name: pumice and it’s produced from a big volcanic explosion with a number of holes produced by the scape of gases during the cooling period. Back to EL Peñon, we visit a young volcano, the Carachi Pampa of an intense black colour produced by basalt spilling. In it´s base there´s a lagoon where you may find pink flamingos. Box Lunch. Pumice field: 50 miles Maximum altitude: 11155 ft.

Day 7: Cafayate

Breakfast. Departure from El Peñon through the puna in Catamarca, where we’ll have an amazing view of the dunes. Descending in altitude, we´ll start entering the Calchaqui Valley at Amaicha town. If the weather allows us, we can do a visit to Quilmes Ruins. Arrival at Cafayate. Night in Cafayate.

Day 8: Return to Salta

Breakfast. Return from Cafayate through Las Conchas Gully towards Salta City. End of our services.
